IGOR KOVALCHUK, MD, PhD
Scientist • Professor • Author • Innovator
Exploring how genes, environment and human experience shape biology, health and society.
Science across boundaries
For nearly three decades, my research has explored how organisms respond to their environment—from genome stability and epigenetic regulation to biotechnology, medicinal plants, cannabinoids, aging and human health. My work increasingly crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries, connecting fundamental biology with medicine, technology and questions about human experience.

RESEARCH
Epigenetics, genome stability, biotechnology, medicinal plants, cannabinoids, aging and human health.
BOOKS & IDEAS
Exploring science, medicine, history and human culture—and the questions that connect them.
INNOVATION
Translating research into biotechnology, therapeutics and practical applications.
TEACHING
Teaching genetics, epigenetics, biotechnology, and cannabis and human health while mentoring the next generation of scientists.
A question that connects my work
Much of my work begins with a deceptively simple question: How much of biology is written in our genes—and how much is rewritten by experience? From epigenetic regulation and environmental stress to aging, nutrition, health and human behavior, this question connects many of the subjects I study and write about.
Current work & ideas
Epigenetics, environment & inheritance

Using Arabidopsis to investigate how environmental conditions influence genome stability and epigenetic states—and how biological responses to stress may persist beyond the initial exposure.
Cannabis, cannabinoids & human health
My research examines how cannabinoids interact with human biology, particularly the endocannabinoid system, inflammation, aging and neurological health, with a focus on therapeutic potential supported by scientific evidence.

Aging, nutrition & longevity

My work examines how genetics, epigenetics, metabolism, nutrition and inflammation interact across the lifespan—and which of these processes may be modified to preserve health and function with age.
Science, history & human culture
My writing explores where science intersects with history and human culture—from ancient beliefs and body marking to healing traditions and the forces that shape human behavior.

Books & writing
My writing extends beyond the laboratory, exploring how science can illuminate questions about human health, history, culture and the ways we understand ourselves.
PUBLISHED & ACADEMIC BOOKS
Books and scholarly works reflecting my research in epigenetics, genome stability, plant biology and biotechnology.

About Igor Kovalchuk
I am a scientist, professor, author and innovator whose work spans epigenetics, genome stability, biotechnology and human health. Over nearly three decades, I have studied how genes interact with environment and experience—from stress responses in plants to cannabinoids, aging and disease in humans. Beyond the laboratory, I write about the intersections of science, medicine, history and human culture.
